How do I know I submitted my application properly?

You will receive a confirmation email notifying you that your application was successfully submitted. You can also go to www.governmentjobs.com, enter your username and password (same username and password used when creating the City of Wilmington online application), and then click on the "Applications & Status" tab.

How can I check the status of my application?

Go to www.governmentjobs.com, enter your username and password (same username and password used when creating the City of Wilmington online application), and then click on the "Applications & Status" tab.

How and when can I update my application?

Changes can be made to your application at anytime before it is submitted. Once you submit an application for a particular position, you cannot go back and make changes. If you make changes and submit another application before the position closes, we will only consider your most recent application. You may also make changes before submitting your application for any new positions. We ask that you contact the Human Resources office if your address and/or telephone number changes after you submit your application.

What if I am not ready to fill out the application at this time?

No application is submitted until you click on the "Accept" button. If at any time you do not want to submit your application, save your work, then logout.

Will I automatically be considered for other positions if I previously submitted an application?

You must submit a separate application for all positions you are interested in.

I missed the deadline. Can I still apply?

As with any position, once a closing date has passed, no application will be accepted or considered. Please continue to visit our website and apply for new jobs as they become available. You may also want to complete a Job Interest Card to automatically be notified when a position you are interested in becomes available.

How do I print my application?

After you have submitted your application, you will see a link to "Click here for a printable version of the application you just submitted."

Can I apply for more than one job at a time?

Yes, once you have completed your online application, you can apply for multiple positions that are currently open.

Who will see my application when I use the online process?

All information is on a secure web server. Only the Human Resources Department and other city department users authorized to review specific job openings will have access.

An email address is required to complete the online application. How do I get an email address?

If you do not already have an email address, free email is available through a number of providers. Though we cannot endorse any particular vendor, you may want to visit Google or Yahoo.

What if I do not have a computer or access to the web?

Computers are available in the Human Resources Department, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are located at 929 N. Front St. in Wilmington, NC. You may also use the public computers located in many public libraries. Family and friends may also have internet access available for you to use. Applications can also be completed by using a smart phone.

No. The City of Wilmington is a separate organization and accepts applications only for City of Wilmington vacancies.

What should I do if I am interested in a position, but it is not listed on the vacancy list?

Applications are accepted only for jobs that are currently being advertised. If you are interested in a position that is not currently open, you may fill out an online job interest card at www.wilmingtonnc.gov/jobs

Who should I contact to follow-up on my application?

Applicants who are selected for interviews will be contacted directly by Human Resources or the hiring department. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we do not notify each applicant individually regarding the status of the recruitment for the position. To check the status of your application, go to www.governmentjobs.com, enter your username and password (same username and password used when creating the City of Wilmington online application), and then click on the "Applications & Status" tab.

What happens after I submit my application?

After the closing date, the applications are reviewed and screened by Human Resources and the hiring manager as an initial step in the selection and hiring process. The most competitive applicants are contacted for an interview. Applicants who are not selected for an interview are notified by email.

How long does it take for the hiring manager to schedule interviews after a position closes?

If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted either by telephone or email, usually within two to four weeks after the closing date.

Can I submit a resume only?

No, the City of Wilmington requires a completed application. The employment application has been designed to provide information needed to make employment-related decisions. An applicant may provide a resume as an attachment to the completed application.

Does the City of Wilmington require candidates for employment to submit to a drug screen or physical examination?

As a condition of employment, all persons selected for employment (full-time and part-time positions) are required to pass a drug test. Only certain positions require a physical examination (Police and Fire).

How long will my application remain "active"?

Applications remain active or on file until a hiring decision has been made. The city does not reactivate applications for future vacancies. You will receive email notification once the position you applied for has been filled.
