Education and Outreach Programs

Cop Camp

(Referrals received from NHCS school social workers and counselors). The Wilmington Police Department has been running it’s cost free Cop Camp since 1995. Cop camp is designed to provide children with an opportunity to positively interact with law enforcement personnel. We make every effort to reach a diverse group of children that really deserve this type of fun experience and give them an alternative to socializing on the streets during the summer. Throughout the five days of camp children participate in recreational activities, field trips, educational experiences, and a community service project. Children leave Cop Camp with a mentor, new friends, and a positive impression of their local police.

Santa Cop

(Referrals received from NHCS school social worker’s and counselors) has been in existence for over 20 years at the Wilmington Police Department. Referrals are made based on determined criteria with priority going to those who have suffered from a parent/caregiver death, house fire, or significant family trauma. On “Santa Cop” day officers and civilians escort children and youth on a one-day shopping spree. The Santa Cop program is made possible by the generous donations of local individuals, businesses, and organizations. As a result of local donations breakfast is also provided to the families prior to the shopping spree.
